Laura Luca is a PhD candidate in Political Science at the University of California Los Angeles. Her latest project “Balancing Acts: Strategic Communication in Alliance Management and Extended Deterrence” employs a formal model to study alliance politics: the way powerful states combine promises of reassurance and threats of abandonment in public and private settings to induce burden-sharing from their junior allies. Other research interests cover emerging technologies and arms control and non-proliferation.
She received an M.A. in Political Science/International Relations from the Geneva Graduate Institute of International and Development Studied and a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from UCLA. She has previously worked in diplomacy with appointments in the European Union Delegation to Iceland, the Romanian Mission to the UN in Geneva and the European Union External Action Service in Brussels.
